EXPO 2002 WINNERS FROM THE HUNTSVILLE AREA

Students from North Alabama performed exceptionally well in the recent statewide Computational Science EXPO held at UAH in Huntsville on May 4th.  Schools that participated included Bob Jones High School, Central School, Hazel Green High School, Monrovia Middle School, Sparkman High School, and Williams Technology Middle School.  This year’s performance continues the tradition of excellence in computational science that has been carried on by the North Alabama area.

Students at Monrovia Middle School and Williams Technology Middle School won the highest number of awards in the middle school team awards.  Monrovia Middle School had the highest average on the computational science written test and students from Monrovia Middle School received eight out of the top ten scores on the test.  A team from Monrovia Middle School also won the middle school Alabama Supercomputer award, named for the Alabama Supercomputer Center and recognizing the team with the highest cumulative score on their project technical paper, project presentation, and their written test scores.  Williams Technology Middle School was recognized for having the first place website.

High school students also performed exceptionally well, receiving one first place, two second place, one fourth place, one fifth place, and two superior project awards.  Bob Jones High School students almost swept the advanced division in high school projects.  High school students also placed nine students in the top fifteen on the written test competition.  Five Bob Jones High School students won scholarships to the University of Alabama in Huntsville, four for their first place computational science project, the other for the highest score of the computational science written test. A team from Bob Jones High School also won the high school Alabama Supercomputer award, named for the Alabama Supercomputer Center and recognizing the team with the highest cumulative score on their project technical paper, project presentation, and their written test scores.  Sparkman High School was also recognized as having the first place website.
