Account

Section 1: Accessing the ASPIRE Computers

In order to connect to your ASPIRE account on the UAH network, a school or user must have either a direct line or a regular phone line which can be used with a modem and a computer to "dial-up" the network and establish a connection. A communication software package is needed to tell the computer how to use the modem to connect to the network. Windows95 has a built-in communication software package named Hyperterminal, and many word processing software suites also come with a communications utility.  You also need the telnet software to connect to the ASPIRE server.

The following directions will help you connect from your location.  If these connection methods do not work, ask your technical advisor or contact the ASPIRE support team.

Connecting to the ASPIRE server using a direct connection from your school.

  • If you have the telnet icon on your desktop, simply double click it.  Connect to aspire.cs.uah.edu  You will be required to supply your login name and password.
  • If you do not have the telnet icon on your desktop, open your browser and type telnet://aspire.cs.uah.edu in the address or location textbox.
  • Another option is to click Start (on the task bar) then choose Run from the pop-up menu.  Type telnet aspire.cs.uah.edu in the textbox that appears.
  • Connecting to the ASPIRE server using a modem and an Internet Service Provider (ISP) If you do not have a direct connection or an ISP, talk with your workshop instructor for further options.

    Section 2: ASPIRE Accounts

A personal UAH account will be issued to teachers who receive training provided by the ASPIRE program. After completing the required paperwork, students of ASPIRE trained teachers are also eligible for a UAH/ASPIRE account if needed.

Student accounts are established when their teacher submits a list of students, and the student completes an account application, a signed account agreement, and a letter signed by the student's parent or guardian. Student accounts are kept active during the school year as long as the student does not violate the rules for having an account. The rules are spelled out in the account agreement.

If your school has a direct connection, it is not necessary to have an account for everyone who wants to use a browser such as Netscape or Microsoft Internet Explorer. You need only to have the necessary browser software installed on your networked computer.

UAH Internet accounts are a Privilege....

Use of the Internet allows students and teachers to have access to an unbelievable amount of material as well as to people from around the world. It literally brings the world to your fingertips. This incredible resource can unlock the passage to knowledge only dreamed about in the recent past.

Do not abuse this priviledge. Unchecked, Internet access can lead to misbehavior and inappropriate usage. Teachers at the schools are held responsible for monitoring student activity and behavior while using their Internet accounts. Complaints from others on the network can result in a school losing all account privileges.

Students/Teachers may not share accounts with anyone and may not share their password with fellow teachers/students. Teachers/Students doing so will lose their account for the school year. NO user (TEACHER OR STUDENT) should ever reveal their password to an unknown user that they meet over the network.

Be courteous when using the Internet. Regular university users do not appreciate being interrupted with a "talk" or "write" command. Please do not use "talk" or "write" with university users. You may email them instead.
